Does Firehouse Subs have vegan options?

Firehouse Subs is a fast-casual restaurant chain in the U.S. that specializes in submarine sandwiches. It was started in 1994 by former firefighters Chris and Robin Sorensen in Jacksonville, Florida. The brand is known for its hearty and flavorful sandwiches, many of which have firefighting-themed names like the Hook & Ladder and the Firehouse Hero. They use high-quality meats, cheeses, and toppings, and their unique steaming method enhances the flavors and textures of their subs.

The company is also dedicated to community service. In 2005, they started the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to support first responders with funding, equipment, and training. This foundation is funded by customer donations and a portion of sales from specific menu items. With over 1,100 locations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Firehouse Subs continues to grow while focusing on quality food and community support.

To meet the rising demand for plant-based options, Firehouse Subs now offers vegan-friendly choices. They have a Veggie Sub that can be customized with vegan ingredients. Customers can also create their own vegan subs using a variety of vegetables, condiments, and sauces. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that vegan customers can enjoy a satisfying meal without compromising their dietary preferences.

Best vegan options at Firehouse Subs

While numerous items at Firehouse Subs can be modified to be vegan, it’s important to note that not all of these modifications are worth it. Here are the options that we recommend considering.

Build your own vegan sandwich

Despite the seemingly limited vegan options on Firehouse Subs’ basic menu, the extensive array of plant-based ingredients offers the perfect opportunity to create a delicious and satisfying veggie sandwich.

Choose your bread

  • White sub roll (all sizes)
  • Gluten-Free Ciabatta Roll (medium)

Unfortunately, the wheat sub roll isn’t vegan, since it contains honey. Do not ask why.

Choose your toppings

  • Au Jus Bell Peppers,
  • Au Jus Bell Mushrooms,
  • Avocado,
  • Black Olives,
  • Caramelized Onions,
  • Cherry Pepper Rings,
  • Chopped Green Peppers,
  • Chopped Pickle Spear,
  • Cucumber,
  • Iceberg Lettuce,
  • Onion,
  • Pickle Spear,
  • Sliced Pepperoncini, and
  • Tomato.

Choose your condiments

  • Balsamic Dressing,
  • Cajun Seasoning,
  • Garlic Blend,
  • Italian Salad Dressing,
  • Marinara Sauce,
  • Spicy Mustard, and
  • Sriracha Sauce.

Also, Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce is probably vegan since it only contains natural smoke flavour. The staff couldn’t tell us what this means, but it probably doesn’t have animal ingredients.

Choose your add-ons

  • Banana Peppers,
  • Black Olives Add-On,
  • Jalapeno Peppers, and
  • Oil and Vinegar Dressing.

What is missing?

Unfortunately, Firehouse Subs can’t provide vegan protein options or cheese alternatives.

Firehouse Salad

It is a pretty decent healthy option, and only mozzarella has to be excluded. It will come with Romaine, diced tomato, green bell pepper, cucumber,

Veggie Sandwich

If you exclude the animal ingredients from the veggie sandwich – which are provolone, cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack, and mayo – then it is still a great option: caramelised green bell peppers, caramelised onions, savoury mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion, deli mustard and Italian dressing,

Chips

Chips are the best vegan side option at Firehouse Subs since they are the only one besides pickle spear. You can also choose from Baked Lays, which are healthier and original Lays.

Firehouse Subs as a vegan in a nutshell

I wouldn’t say that Firehouse Subs will be my favourite vegan sub, however, It is worth a visit. While there is no real plant-based protein on the menu, there are still plenty of vegan toppings and condiment options. So, you can make many various tasty vegan sandwiches at Firehouse Subs. Also, the salad is fresh, and you can make it even tastier with one of the vegan dressings. However, if I had to choose between Firehouse Subs and other sandwich places, i would definitely choose Panera Bread instead of Firehouse.
