Is It Vegan is a mobile tool for anyone interested in eliminating animal products from their diet.
Creator, Conner Burggraf has been vegan since August 2010. Aside from Is It Vegan, he works at a doggy daycare in Portland, Oregon and is an aspiring vegan chef who cooks in his free time. He took some time out to answer my questions.
I remember when I first went vegan in 2010, it was really hard to figure out which ingredients were "safe" to eat. I spent hours and hours trying to memorize the animal ingredient list and it was really discouraging. I do believe that everyone should be able to go vegan, and I wanted to make it easier for them.
How long did the app take to make from creation to release?
I came up with the idea in February 2013 and we started working on it in March. Four months later was our very first release, in July. We've been working on it nonstop since then and raised some money through kickstarter for a new version which we released on February 1st, 2014.
What do you hope to achieve with the release?
My hope is to make it as easy as possible for people to transition to veganism, and in turn, help save animals' lives.
What has the response been like so far?
So far we've heard a lot of great success stories about people who used our app to help become vegan. Someone recently told us it would have been impossible to become vegan without it, which is awesome.
What are your future plans?
Right now we are trying to spread the word of our app as much as we can, while we work on new features and improvements for it.
What other vegan people helped you with the app?
My dad is vegan and an app developer, so he helped me from start to finish with it. And my mom (also vegan) has helped tremendously to help build our ingredient and product database. There were also a ton of people who helped out by donating to our kickstarter, and others who shared our fliers on their pages.
