No Meat Athlete book - interview with Matthew Ruscigno

Co-writer Matthew Ruscigno who contributed the technical nutritional information and some recipes answered a few of my questions recently.

Why did you decide to write your book?
With over 20,000 followers, it only made sense for Fair Winds Press to be interested in the unique content of NoMeatAthlete.com being further developed into a book.
 
Plus Matt has a really cool story - he became an ethical vegetarian while training for the Boston marathon and he actually thought it would negatively effect his training. Turns out it his training improved! He then transitioned to veganism as he trained for his first ultra-marathon and his running kept improving.
 
The book is not about him though. It is more of a fun guidebook for anyone who wants to eat healthy, learn the facts about plant-based nutrition and be motivated to run or exercise more.  

What do you hope to achieve with the release?
Personally, as the co-author I want non-vegetarians to know that this is a thing: there are lots of vegetarian and vegan runners who eat this way not only for ethical reasons but for performance benefits. Also Matt is a great writer so the book is very motivating- something we could use more of in our life.

What has the response been like so far?
I just joined Matt for part of his 6-week, 40+ event book tour. I did the South California, Arizona and Austin events and it was super fun. It's a self-funded tour and each event is different - from juice bars to omnivorous restaurants ("we just love what you do!") to a plant-based resource center in Tucson. The majority of people who came, out of 20-50 people at each event, are new vegans or vegan-ish. This is important because we're reaching new people, it's not the same crowd of vegans coming to the events. Also, they are all really stoked! People are exciting about plant-based eating and I love it.

What’s the message you want people and athletes to take from your book?
You don't have to eat animal products to perform well. And it can be fun! Running and restricted eating are often seen as discipline-oriented activities. But it doesn't have to be like that. It's actually very enjoyable to go out and run 10 miles and to eat only plant foods. It doesn't restrict your life, it expands it!

What are your future plans?
I have my own book coming out on Fair Winds Press in the summer of 2014. I'm not at liberty to talk about it just yet, but I can see it's not what you'll expect. And I'm very excited about it.

I gave over 25 lectures this year all over the country, but I've never spoken at a Veg Fest! In 2014 I want to get to a few of them. So if anyone reading this wants me to speak get in touch!
