Tracie O’Keefe is a vegan clinical hypnotherapist, psychotherapist and naturopath. She spoke to me recently about her new book, Inspiration for Survive and Prosper, which helps people to overcome crisis or trauma.
Purchase the book here.
Why did you decide to write your book?
As a trauma therapist I’ve worked with more than 20,000 people over 20 years, helping them get over major crises in their lives including abandonment, abuse, divorce, separation, loss of limb, bankruptcy and major life disappointments. I’m the go to girl for getting over the big stuff. My methods are very fast because I’m a hypnotherapist and it’s work I love to do.
As child I had been abandoned in a series of government institutions, growing up with little formal education. I’m a survivor though. I got to college, then university and trained in 11 professions. I teach people what I have learnt about how to survive and then go on to prosper in life.
In 2012 the love of my life left me and we sold our home. Then I experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) around what happened to me as a child. I thought I was going to die and nearly did. This is what I help people with every day in my clinic, so I had to pull everything I know out of the bag to help myself. In doing that I created Inspiration for Survive and Prosper
– wrote the book, devised the online course and live workshops because I knew I had to share this with others to help them recover from crisis or trauma, fast.
I had to walk my walk and talk my talk…and it worked.
What do you hope to achieve with the release?
As well as running my clinic
I’ve authored over 100 self-help courses, many with comprehensive ebooks. It’s what I do. I released this book to help people get over their traumas in life, fast. Every day I see people coming into my office who have been on a series of psychotropic drugs for years and never got any help to move on with their lives.
Crisis and trauma are part of everyday normal life. Heavily drugging someone up and shutting them down helps no one. You have to go through the process of learning to survive that crisis without your life completely falling to pieces. Then you have to change who and what you are to become the new person that allows you once again to prosper.
If you don’t do this or don’t know how to do this, you get stuck and live a place where you are not engaging with life. It is not about can you move on with your life but learning how to skill up to do that – and fast.
What has the response been like so far?
The reviews and people’s reactions have been amazing. I suppose it may be because my methods are universal and apply to nearly all people getting over trauma and crisis. I ask people in these situations to be an active participant in their own survival and transformation to go on to live a prosperous life.
I don’t cut corners and am very direct in what I ask people to do. There’s no sitting around and trying to work out the meaning of life. When you are getting past crisis you need to be proactive, have agency and claim back your personal power.
What’s the message you want people and activists to take from your book?
Let me say that everyone has a right to work within their own paradigm.
As a naturopath and medical nutritionist who runs a cruelty-free, vegan health centre and company
, the advice in my book is very clear: Don’t pollute your body with animal products, for which it is not designed, at a time when you need it to back you up.
If you want your body to behave like a primed rescuer after a crisis, you need to treat it like a plant-powered athlete treats their body. Double your efforts to take care of your physical health all the time, not just when you feel like you might do it the favour.
Learning how to use your mind to recover from the situation needs to be strategic, pragmatic and common sense. You have to tool up with what you need to do. As a hypnotherapist I teach people to hone their minds into a finely crafted tool to help motivate you to be the last person standing and the first out of the starting blocks.
What are your future plans?
This is my first book for five years. The project is huge, reaches out internationally and will help thousands of people in different countries. I resisted all the efforts to make the book what they call commercial and watered down.
I’m planning to run 3-day live workshops
next year in Australia then internationally, as well as speaking at events and conducting staff crisis management training in corporations.
I want people to learn to take charge of their own lives, be great survivors, be strong, transform themselves and go on to have amazingly prosperous lives once again or in some cases for the very first time. If I and my clients can do that, so can you.
