Speciesism: The Movie - interview with Mark Devries
Written by Leigh-Chantelle
Created Monday, 09 December 2013

Speciesism: The Movie a Gritty Documentary Challenging the Way We Look at Animals & Each Other. This movie confronts contemporary agriculture, daring—in the face of cultural complacency and industry intimidation—to question its standard practices. With undercover investigations occupying headlines almost monthly, it’s no mystery modern farms are struggling to keep secrets. Director Mark Devries takes his hunch about the business several steps further, following a gut feeling through to its logical conclusion. The first-time filmmaker tables law school and instead hits the road, unexpectedly uncovering answers to uncomfortable questions about privilege and sentience.

Encounters with an Egalitarian film about Yves Bonnardel
Written by Leigh-Chantelle
Created Wednesday, 04 December 2013

The film "Encounters with an Egalitarian" by the French Swiss director Gwennaël Bolomey gives the golden opportunity to see into the mind of Yves Bonnardel - a French activist committed to egalitarianism and animal causes and the author of numerous articles, pamphlets and essays. The two men, longtime friends, met on several occasions, both at Yves's countryside retreat and at activist events. These interviews help to sketch a portrait of a thinker who, in the last twenty years, has had a very strong influence on the French-speaking anti-speciesism movement.

Encounters_with_an_Egalitarian

In a reflection on the place given to animals in Western societies and the numerous ways in which they are exploited, Yves Bonnardel questions our relationship to non-human sentient beings, challenges humanism and re-examines the basic notion of equality, underlining the pressing need to apply it to other species.

Divided into chapters (The Notion of Equality, The Idea of Nature, Animal Exploitation, etc..) "Encounters with ..." is thirty minutes long and features English subtitles. The film is now available on DVD, and for public screenings and debates.

Watch the film.

Catching up with Vida Vegan Alumni: Q&A with Leigh-Chantelle
Written by Leigh-Chantelle
Created Monday, 18 November 2013

Jess and the gals at Vida Vegan Con published this Q&A with me over the weekend. Hope you like it:

My, how time flies! We started this Q & A series at Vida Vegan Headquarters heading into September’s VeganMoFo, and since we received such great feedback and responses from our alumni, we’re excited to continue with a few more final installments. These special interviews offer a glimpse into our past alumni’s upcoming projects, summer shenanigans and reveal what they really learned at VVC2013. They’re sharing which class sticks out in their minds so many months later, and just what they’d like to see more and less of in vegan blogging, a question that’s always on our own minds.

Our next interview is with one of our furthest traveling guests for Vida Vegan Con, (mostly) Australian-based author, international speaker, activist and blogger, Leigh-Chantelle of Viva La Vegan! and the Green Earth Group.

Letter to a New Vegan by Leigh-Chantelle from Viva la Vegan!
Written by Leigh-Chantelle
Created Friday, 15 November 2013

There's a great little book being put together by some long-term vegans. They've been looking for submissions (which close today) of letters from other vegans for their Letters to a New Vegan. They are looking to create a community of words that can encircle new vegans everywhere, from all walks of life, as they embark on their own journeys.

If you would like to submit a letter please do ASAP as they've extended the submission date to allow for 100 letters.

LettersLetters photo from FaceBook

Here's what I submitted:

Dear New Vegan,

Congratulations on getting here. You have chosen to think with your mind and feel with your heart – a talent that seems to be missing in most of the mainstream population.

I don’t care for the reasons you chose to become a vegan - and there are many reasons. Whether it’s for animal rights and ethical reasons (that’s the reason I started my vegan journey almost twenty years ago); health and dietary; environmental and sustainable living; religious or spiritual; or just because someone you respected planted the seed; you have chosen to choose, and you chose compassion. Always remember this.
